Summary:
Trevor Noah is best known as the late night talk show host who took over the Daily Show after the retirement of Jon Stewart in 2015. Trevor Noah is South African and this book relates the many fascinating and improbable stories that made up his childhood.
Noah reminds us of the horrors of apartheid (forced segregation of the races) in his native country. The fact that his mother is black and his father is white was actually a crime when he was born in the 1980s. People of different races could not marry and definitely could not have a child together. But that's exactly what happened in Trevor's case.
By the bizarre and hateful traditions of South Africa at that time he was labelled as 'coloured' to differentiate him from black people and white people. Everyone was classified based on their race. He was kept out of the public eye as much as possible growing up. When seen in public, Trevor's mother had to pretend she did not know him. As a child Trevor found this profoundly disturbing. His white father from Switzerland also could not acknowledge any connection with the boy.
Despite the horrors of life in South Africa, this memoir is upbeat and very funny. Trevor Noah was the kind of child that drives parents crazy. He was impulsive, clever and always getting himself into trouble. He was maddening and yet he was also adorable and irresistible.
There is no bitterness in his retelling of his childhood despite the poverty and violence that was always around him. He relates how difficult it was to fit in because of his unusual racial status. Noah's honesty is refreshing. At no time in his book does he exaggerate his importance or avoid embarrassing stories about himself. Quite the opposite, in fact. His stories about his first girlfriend, his illegal money making schemes and his trouble fitting in with other kids are honest, endearing and often hilarious.
It is incredible to think that a young man who grew up under such horrible circumstances could turn out to be the successful host of a TV show half a world away.Trevor Noah is best known as the late night talk show host who took over the Daily Show after the retirement of Jon Stewart in 2015. Summary:
My husband's mother is a triplet. She, along with her sisters, celebrated their 80th birthday a few weeks ago. It is no surprise then that The Quintland Sisters by Shelley Wood caught my eye. A well researched work of historical fiction, it tells the story of the famous Dionne quintuplets who were born to an Ontario family in 1934, just five years before my husband's mother and her sisters.
The Quintland Sisters is written from the perspective of a well developed fictional character, Emma Trimpany, a young woman who assisted the midwife the night the quintuplets were born and lovingly took care of them during their early years. The book is written as a diary, interspersed with personal letters and newspaper articles. It primarily chronicles Emma's life with the quintuplets but also her own dreams, loves and tragedies.
We learn that the Dionne quintuplets were born in Corbeil, in rural northern Ontario, to a poor, young couple who already had five children. The provincial government took the babies under their official guardianship declaring their parents unable to care for them. The province built a hospital across from the house where they were born. This hospital soon included a viewing gallery for the 6,000 visitors per day who came to see the girls, benefitting not only the local economy but their family and those who cared for them. At one point Emma describes the quintuplets as a side show and the atmosphere outside the compound as a roadside circus complete with make shift souvenir and snack stands selling postcards, cotton candy, popcorn and hot dogs.
It eventually dawns on Emma that everything in Quintland is done for appearances -- a grand facade which hides the greed, pain and conflict of the girls' dysfunctional childhood.
My mother-in-law's parents had themselves made the trip to Corbeil to see the Dionne quintuplets, at the time never thinking that they too would one day be the parents of multiples. The triplets became minor celebrities in Kitchener. Their early childhood was chronicled in the Kitchener Record with a photo of the girls appearing in the newspaper each year on their birthday. Fortunately, their parents had the opportunity to draw from the Dionne experience and moved their children to the backyard for fresh air and sunshine when onlookers congregated near the front porch.
The Quintland Sisters is available in print, e-book and downloadable audio formats at the Stratford Public Library. My husband's mother is a triplet. Summary:
Most Canadians agree that a will is important to assure that your physical property is divided according to your wishes. But what about your digital assets? Digital assets such as EBay and PayPal accounts, loyalty award programs, playlists, online subscriptions, photos and family movies also have value. Your digital files may also include financial records, life insurance policies and contracts -- valuable assets which could go unnoticed. Our online world requires that we have a digital legacy plan. The authors of this book provide a step by step approach to digital estate planning including helpful worksheets. The book also provides guidance for the professionals, entrepreneurs and creative artists who conduct their business online.
The authors explain that planning empowers you to determine for yourself your personal legacy. Planning gives you the opportunity to name a digital steward to see to your digital wishes after death. The worksheets assist with listing your digital assets and the necessary information, such as passwords, to access them.
Do you want to be a digital zombie? Decide and communicate to your digital steward what you would like done with your social media accounts. Some social media networks such as Facebook and Instagram allow for a legacy version of your account while most just provide the option to deactivate.
Unfortunately, only half of all adults in Canada have a will. Assure peace of mind for yourself and save emotional hardship on your loved ones by drawing up a will and also an accompanying digital legacy plan. Summary:
Rick Mercer is one of Canada's most beloved television personalities. Born in Newfoundland, Mercer first came to prominence on the CBC's This Hour has 22 Minutes. In 2004, the CBC gave him his own show: The Mercer Report. That show was always at or near the top of the ratings for fifteen seasons until its final episode last year. Mercer is not sure what he will do next; he just knows it is time to move on.
Mercer has loved his years on CBC television. He feels blessed to have had the opportunity to travel across this vast country so many times sharing his findings with a willing and engaged audience. Of all the segments he will be remembered for, the most popular and most enduring were his weekly rants.
Begun on This Hour has 22 Minutes, Mercer carried them over to his new show. Each week he walks through the same alley with his faithful camera operator walking backwards. During the segment, he rants about what is on his mind. He is usually critiquing a government official or questioning why things are the way they are. Sometimes these rants are profound, particularly when he tackles difficult issues like bullying, prejudice and injustice.
This book is not his autobiography. That may come at a later date. This book is mostly a collection of his favourite rants written in just a couple of pages each. It makes the book easy to read. You can read some of the rants or all of them. You can follow his chronological order or jump around if you wish.
What the reader is left with is a collection of Mercer's favourite memories after a long career of special moments. He includes references to bungee jumping with Rick Hanson, diving into a freezing lake with David Suzuki and rolling a joint with author Pierre Berton.
Rick Mercer is a proud Canadian. This will be self-evident to anyone who reads this very interesting and entertaining book.Rick Mercer is one of Canada's most beloved television personalities. Summary:
Readers might know the outgoing Bob McKenzie from his hockey commentary on TSN TV and radio. He is joined in this book by Jim Lang who has his own radio sports show. These two men have hockey in their blood. They have both written about hockey before but for this collaboration they have attempted to discover the true definition of a hockey hero.
This book is a collection of short stories about ordinary Canadians who have battled to overcome difficult struggles in their lives. Each of them has used hockey as a vehicle to achieve personal fulfillment. Some of these stories are well known; other stories will be new to readers but no less significant. These are inspiring tales of everyday heroes "who in the face of terrible adversity strive for a better life, not just for themselves, but for others, too."
There are fourteen heroes presented in this book. They are not presented in any specific order. You can read all of them or pick and choose.
Some of these athletes live with disabilities that made playing the game almost impossible. Others recovered from life threatening injuries on the ice. Some made full recoveries while others found an outlet in sledge hockey or leagues for blind and deaf athletes. I had personally never heard of the Toronto Ice Owls, the world's first competitive hockey team of blind and partially sighted players. Instead of a regular puck, they use a hollow plastic wheel filled with nuts and bolts which makes a lot of noise. Players move toward the sound until they can see the puck. There are now teams in Montreal and Vancouver.
There are also cultural stories. Some of these heroes are Canadians who found it difficult to break into the game: ethnic minorities, a female broadcaster, refugees, an LGBT athlete and more. The story of Harnarayan Singh, the son of immigrants from India, and his lifelong dream of doing play-by-play on Hockey Night in Canada is a particularly entertaining chapter. As the voice of Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition, Singh had to create a few new hockey terms. Since Punjabi and English do not always translate perfectly, the "penalty box" became the "the box of punishment."
Bob McKenzie and Jim Lang have written an easy to read book about everyday hockey heroes. The stories are heart warming and can be enjoyed even by casual sports fans. But if you are a true fan of the game, I think you will love this book.Readers might know the outgoing Bob McKenzie from his hockey commentary on TSN TV and radio. Tony's Wife is the story of Saverio Armandonada and Chi Chi Donatelli. Saverio is a handsome, charming, talented entertainer with thick brown curls who was forced out of his parents' home in Detroit at the age of 16 for contemplating work as a singer. Chi Chi is a smart, independently minded, ambitious and gifted young woman who works as a seamstress in a blouse factory in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. With the support of her family, she sings and writes songs in her spare time.
Saverio and Chi Chi meet in 1938 and soon become a duo touring with a big band orchestra. Old world values clash with new world standards as Saverio agrees to change his name to Tony Arma. While Chi Chi proudly remembers that she comes from people who live life around a kitchen table, Saverio lives the life of a ladies' man. While serving in the Navy, Saverio shares his feelings for Chi Chi. Despite reservations, Chi Chi accepts Saverio's marriage proposal and so begins a journey of sacrifice, infidelity and regret; but also forgiveness, healing and love redefined.
Trigiani has a gift for taking the reader back in time with beautifully detailed descriptions -- the colour, texture and cut of a velvet jacket; the sight of beach umbrellas and towels on a Jersey shore, the sag of a wooden dance floor, the sounds of a large happy family, the aroma of roasted chestnuts and the taste of homemade wine.

Summary:
In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, the author reminds us of the common courtesy of cleaning up after ourselves. In a frank but charming and humorous manner, Margaret Magnusson encourages and guides readers to rid themselves of unnecessary possessions to enhance their own lives while not leaving a burden for their loved ones.
In addition to making life easier, she sees the practice of death cleaning as an opportunity to start a conversation with loved ones about the inevitable and to address it with ourselves.
Her methods allow for the careful and thoughtful disposal of possessions. Once completed, it frees us up to spend more time with family and friends and the activities we enjoy.
She suggests that the practice takes time and ideally shouldn’t be rushed as a result of a crisis. She recommends starting with the large items in your home and finishing with the small. She provides advice on how to sort through clothes, photographs, books, letters, kitchen things and tools. She also stresses the importance of destroying secrets which might cause your loved ones unhappiness after you are gone.
Magnusson introduces the clever concept of a "throw-away box". It is a labelled box, no bigger than a shoe box, within which we can place items which have no value to anyone else but ourselves. It can simply be thrown away once we are gone.
The wisdom in this book is not only helpful to those in their later years. It is a philosophy which can be useful at any age. In the words of the author, "Life will become more pleasant and comfortable if we get rid of the abundance."In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, the author reminds us of the common courtesy of cleaning up after ourselves. Summary:
The Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman is both a heart-wrenching and heart warming novel of historical fiction set in Montreal and the Eastern Townships of Quebec spanning almost 30 years beginning in 1948. It is the story of Maggie, the daughter of an educated Anglo-Canadian father and a French Canadian mother from a poor family. Their marriage is precarious and a reflection of the relationships among the French and English residents in their small town southeast of Montreal who simply tolerate each other. At the age of 15 Maggie falls in love with Gabriel, a handsome 16 year old French Canadian farm boy with blond hair and grey eyes. Maggie's father disapproves of their relationship as he has a better future in mind for her. He sends her away to live with her aunt and uncle. When Maggie gives birth to a daughter the baby is sent to an orphanage. Maggie names her daughter Elodie which is a type of hardy lily. Elodie will need the resilience that her name bestows to survive the neglect and abuse of the church run orphanages turned mental institutions, a plan by the provincial government under Premier Maurice Duplessis to receive more federal funding. Ten years after Elodie is born, Maggie and Gabriel reconnect and start a new life together, one which includes the search for their daughter. The end of the novel is one of hope and forgiveness but also of determination to reveal the injustices suffered by thousands of children at the hands of the Catholic Church and the Government of Quebec at the time.
Goodman writes a beautifully descriptive, moving novel with well developed characters. The novel flows chronologically in third person narrative with chapters alternating between Maggie and Elodie. Readers of historical fiction and family sagas should find this novel especially appealing. The Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman is both a heart-wrenching and heart warming novel of historical fiction set in Montreal and the Eastern Townships of Quebec spanning almost 30 years beginning in 1948. Summary:
Pang, a writer and scholar, has written a well-researched book which examines the importance of rest in our lives. He claims that we need to rethink rest as simply the absence of work and look at it as work’s partner. Both work and rest are necessary for a good life. In today’s world where stress and overwork are considered a badge of honour we need more than ever to be diligent about rest. We need to look at rest as a deliberate activity, not something to do when we’ve finished everything else. Rest is something we have to learn how to do well. According to the author, it is possible to rest in ways that are challenging and rewarding, that make you happier and healthier and literally make your mind work better. The author devotes chapters to the benefits of walking, naps, sleep, hobbies, vacations, travel, sabbaticals and regular exercise. He concludes by proclaiming that over the course of a life, deliberate rest restores your energy, gives you more time, helps you to do more, and encourages a focus on doing the things that matter while avoiding those that don’t.Pang, a writer and scholar, has written a well-researched book which examines the importance of rest in our lives. According to Gail Vaz-Oxlade, Canada's personal finance expert, graduates are coming out of school with record levels of debt. In her book, Saving for School, she outlines ways in which parents and students can make plans to minimize such debt.
She recommends that parents set up and start contributing to a Registered Education Savings Plan as early as possible. The RESP is a tax free investment vehicle which includes a grant that the government gives to families as an incentive to save for their children's post-secondary education.
Vaz-Oxlade walks through the process of choosing a RESP provider and the various ways to invest. She also warns against high fee RESP providers. Do your homework!
She touches upon the Canada Learning Bond, a grant paid by the government of Canada, as a means to assist low income families with saving money for their children's education.
The author also suggests encouraging family and friends to contribute to your child's RESP on their birthday and other special occasions; that students apply for scholarships and government grants and most importantly learn to manage money.
Despite the best laid plans, students may have to borrow some money to see themselves through school. The author suggests looking at potential earning capacity and recommends borrowing no more than one year's net salary.

The Revenge of AnalogThe Revenge of Analog, BookReal Things and Why They Matter
by Sax, DavidBook - 2016Book, 2016
Added May 31, 2017
Comment:
The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter written by David Sax is an exploration into society's growing desire for more tactile, human-centric experiences. This insight first revealed itself to the author in 2012, when he noticed a record store open in his Toronto neighbourhood. After spending a decade replacing physical music collections with virtual ones, music lovers were rediscovering the pleasure of physically browsing and buying music and record stores are thriving. Most significant is the demographic buying these records -- young music lovers who grew up with digital music!
The author soon discovered that the very human need for social interactions and the need for all of our senses to be stimulated are at the heart of the revenge of analog.
Board Game Cafes are increasing in popularity, encouraging players to create and maintain real friendships. Paintball and Escape Rooms replicate video games but provide a real experience and social interaction. Niche focused print magazines are providing a venue for bloggers who want a level of credibility that isn't achievable online. Independent bookstores are growing once again with a clientele who appreciate the assistance of staff who can link their reading tastes with recommendations. Analog schools have proven to be a better learning environment. Children need to physically touch, smell and, yes, even taste paint. Tech companies design analog work spaces with white boards, ping pong tables and free meals to encourage more interpersonal interaction and collaboration in a workplace which would otherwise lean toward isolation.
Sax, a writer and reporter, concludes that as digital technology continues to rightfully thrive, the more important analog becomes to our overall well being.
This insightful, well researched and thoroughly documented book is available at the Stratford Public Library through our Perth County Information Network of Libraries in print, e-book and audio formats. The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter written by David Sax is an exploration into society's growing desire for more tactile, human-centric experiences.
