Although there is a plethora of WW II books, this is one that shouldn't be avoided. A dwarf Trudi narrates her challenges living in her small village and portrays a believable story of the times and the nature of people.

I adored this book- a perspective of WW2 that is unlike anything I've ever read. Ursula Hegi is a master at her craft!

Trudi, a dwarf, is the town's storyteller who lives part of her life through turbulant, Nazi-torn Germany during the Second World War. Hegi takes us through Trudi's life from early on, showing how cruel life can sometimes be. (Dec 2003)
