I have little to add to the already many glowing reviews, except to say that this book eloquently serves to remind us to view our fellow creatures in a less utilitarian way.

I loved this very sad story. The author is able to relay the horrors of war in a direct yet non-graphic way, as told by the insightful horse, Joey. This is a great read to introduce young readers to a very different time in history. Joey's gentle and nuanced storytelling is also a good vehicle for showing kids how to be keen observers. Keep some tissues handy -- you may need one.

War Horse is an excellent book. This book looks at World War 1 through the eyes of a horse who was reluctantly part of the war. It is a great book for introducing children to the horror of war, because it presents difficult subject matter in a sensitive and age-appropriate way. This is also a great book for encouraging empathy for animals. The book is fairly short and easy to read, but it packs a lot of impact and content into a very accessible narrative.

This book details the difficult lives of horses drafted into the service for WWI from the perspective of one of these horses. Used like vehicles, pushed beyond their limits of endurance, carrying soldiers and pulling supplies through mud and freezing rain, the horses suffer in this book and some die, but it’s not all sad and this is a fantastic read: a realistic glimpse into the frontlines and the sacrifices made by horses forced to serve alongside soldiers.

I have read this book once for myself, once to a classroom, and once for my own children. I cried all three times. Great story for grade school aged kids.

Amazing story. I love how it is from the point of view of a horse. It is so innocent. I also love the neutrality of the book. Must read!

I read this before I saw the movie, and I hate to say it, but the movie was far better. I loved it though. A good book, easy read, but too much bad language for the age it was meant for.

"Joey is a war horse, but he wasn't always. Once, long ago, he was a farm horse and a gentle boy named Albert was his master. Then World War 1 came along and changed everything. Albert's father sell Joey to the army where the beautiful, red-bay horse is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers not much older than Albert off of battlefields. Among the clamoring of guns, and plodding through the cold mud, Joey wonders if the war will ever end. And if it does, will he ever find Albert again?"
