When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

You might want to bring Kevin Kwan's entire trilogy about the uber-rich of Singapore — that's how addictive these books are — to the beach. The action in Crazy Rich Asians is set off when Rachel Chu is invited to Singapore to meet her boyfriend, Nick Young's, family, and discovers what he really ... Read More »

Very much a soap opera, but a well-written, occasionally observant one. The Singapore setting offers a fresh perspective. Followed by two more books. Suggested pairing: cheap champagne and lots of it.

A fast and funny exploration of what it means to be young and in love... with the heir to one of the biggest fortunes in Asia! Readers can't help but cheer for the unsuspecting Rachel Chu, Nick's American girlfriend. Their life seems so sweet and simple, but everything changes when they head to Nick's home to spend the summer in Singapore. Everything in this story is rich and over the top, from the decadent descriptions of parties and private jets to Nick's interfering family. This was the perfect book to bring to the beach this summer!

This book is fun to read to learn about someone’s lifestyle and habits - someone who’s out of your usual circle of acquaintances. Slightly ‘soapy’ (happy end and all that) but still a nice read. If you plan a trip, this book will make a great companion.

Crazy Rich Asians is truly a guilty pleasure. It has sumptuous food, fashion, locales, culture, and characters. I love a classic significant other meets the parents/friends and this fits the bill. The movie is coming out in August and I can't wait to see it!

I thought the balancing act pulled off here was impressive. Just when I was getting bored by the use of private jets as a plot device, or the dulling effect of so many branded items, Kevin Kwan pulled me back in with a character bored by the same things while enjoying the benefits. The formatting of the eBook I read was a bit disruptive. If you’d prefer a seamless display of translated footnotes (amusing), and geneaological tables (ditto), I recommend a bound paper copy of this book.

I'm not at all sure why this book is advertised as a comedy, as it is not very comedic. However, I was completely drawn in and hooked by the family - their relationships and their dynamic. I couldn't get enough of all of these vibrant characters and their world. I also found myself craving the food described, and then feeling sad that I couldn't be in Singapore to try the food. Quite an addictive read, but don't expect a comedy.

This was the most entertaining series I have read in an extremely long time.

I can't wait for the movie to come out this summer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book although it ended rather abruptly. Will definitely look for the next book to see how the story continues

“But there must be something we can do.”
“Doing nothing can sometimes be the most effective form of action,” Sophie remarked. “If you do nothing, you’ll be sending a clear message: that you’re stronger than they think you are. Not to mention a lot classier. Think about it.”

Eleanor had a long-held theory about men. She truly believed that for most men, all that talk of “being in love” or “finding the right one” was absolute nonsense. Marriage was purely a matter of timing, and whenever a man was finally done sowing his wild oats and ready to settle down, whichever girl happened to be there at the time would be the right one.
