Jenny is a successful family doctor, the mother of three great teenagers, married to a celebrated neurosurgeon. But when her youngest child, fifteen-year-old Naomi, doesn't come home after her school play, Jenny's seemingly ideal life begins to crumble. The authorities launch a nationwide search with no success. Naomi has vanished and her family is broken. As the months pass, the worst-case scenarios--kidnapping, murder--seem less plausible. The trail has gone cold. Yet, for a desperate Jenny, the search has barely begun.

It's really more a book about The Mother and I kept having to remind myself that the story was being told through the anguish of a mother whose child has gone missing. At times it was just a bit annoying that these busy parents seemed to know next to nothing about their children's activities, friends, sexuality, drug usage etc., but I guess it's not all that uncommon. Sometimes parents don't probe beyond the surface because they just don't want to know. The writing was quite well done and rich with imagery. I was not surprised, but I was a little perplexed by the ending.

I had seen this book mentioned on several lists including Kerri at Paper Plus.A very interesting first novel in a way reminiscent of Susan Hill .A family is shattered by the disappearance of their teenage daughter.Great lengths are gone to by all concerned to discover what happened to her.It soon becomes apparent that they knew very little about her. This is a commentary on the busy, parallel lives many professionals lead with their families while doing justice to their careers. The guilt and the anguish are enduring. It would make a good film.
