"The internationally bestselling author of No Time for Goodbye returns with a haunting psychological thriller that blends the twists and chills of Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe with the driving suspense of Dennis Lehane and Harlan Coben, in which a man hears sounds that quite possibly emanate from the dead. Paul Davis is hearing some very strange noises in the night. He hears the clickety-click of a manual typewriter--as if someone is vigorously tapping the keys. The eerie sounds began soon after his wife, Charlotte, bought him a classic antique Underwood. But only Paul can hear the noise coming from downstairs; Charlotte doesn't hear anything unusual. Is Paul losing his mind? Maybe. Or is something really there? Eight months ago, he stumbled upon Connecticut's infamous "Apology Killer"--a psychopath who forced his victims to typewrite personal apologies to him before he cut their throats--disposing of two mutilated bodies on Milford's Post Road. Most shocking of all, the killer was his colleague, someone he thought he knew. Paul's been seeing a therapist for months to recover from the nearly fatal encounter, but his nerves and short-term memory have suffered since the traumatic encounter. There's only one way to learn if the noises are real or a figment of his hyper-imagination. One night, Paul rolls a sheet of paper into the machine. The next morning, when he checks the page, there is a chilling message: "We typed our apologies like he asked but he killed us anyway." As he desperately searches to find a rational explanation for the note and the noises, Paul slowly begins to consider the unthinkable: The message is authentic, and the women butchered by his colleague are reaching out to him from beyond the grave."--

RATING: 3 STARS
2018; William Morrow/HarperCollins
(Review Not on Blog)

For me, this was easy to figure out who did it (too many Dateline episodes!) - minus one star. Solving the mystery is not a deal breaker for me, as then it becomes a Colombo episode (working it backward). I found the plot weak. It seemed to have a beginning and ending and everything else was forced in whether it worked or not - minus another star. Barclay keeps me reading and has interesting ideas so I will always read one his books.

Holy Moses! I didn't see that coming! You allow Linwood Barclay and A Noise Downstairs to lead you ever so gently - like a complacent sheep - to a place you think you're going, then drop you off a cliff you never expected was there!

4 stars, B+ as there were some parts that drag just a little and some that seem out of place and a different voice that the one we know from Linwood Barclay

I enjoyed this book but it was a departure from Linwood Barclay’s typical writing style. The storyline was not new but it kept you wanting to read to the end where there was a surprising twist.

A very entertaining thriller.

If you really want to waste your time on this utterly predictable and poorly written “thriller”, then save yourself some time: read up to chapter 22 then skip to chapter 46 and finish the book by skim reading to the end. You won’t miss a thing.

I love Linwood Barclay and don't think he gets nearly enough attention. I like to suggest him for fans of Harlan Coben, but he really does have his own take on the thriller/suspense novel. This one was especially good, and a bit of a departure for Barclay. When Paul starts hearing the old typewriter his wife got him clicking away in the middle of the night, it seems impossible that it could be anything but ghosts. Like a locked door mystery, he and his wife are certain no one could have gotten in. Which leaves ghosts, or the possibility that Paul is going crazy after the terrifying even that kicks off the book. Either way, this is a page-turner that I guarantee will keep you from guessing all of the twists.

I have read almost all of this author books. Not sure if it was just me, but I did not grasp the first couple chapters of this book. Put it down and read other books. When I picked it up again I got the story line and continued reading. Really enjoyed this book once my brain kicked in. Really enjoy all the books written by this author.

This is the first book by this author in which I was disappointed. Much of the plot was a little too obvious. It felt like it was a book written in a hurry.

Wow. So many positive comments on this book!
I've read all of Barkclay's novels & enjoyed every one of them... until now.
I just could not empathize with the main character.
I tried.
