Ocean Prey

A Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers Novel

An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver . . . a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed. They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf. When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport. And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers.

Unlike some other comments, I appreciate that John Sandford is willing to take the risk of having his characters change and evolve as the Davenport (& Flowers) series continues. I look forward to each new entry in this series and have never been disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed Ocean Prey.

For characters, dialogue and plot, the best since Elmore Leonard.

Another excellent book by John Sandford (John Camp). Really love his books!

I've read all the Davenport books and man, this one was disappointing. Not the typical Lucas book for me and even JS states in the back it's more technical than he usually gets with this series. Maybe JS got tired of writing it and his mind went somewhere else? I wish I knew. I sure do miss the old gang from back in the day in Minnesota. Liked seeing Virgil again though. Lucas was a bit different too. Not sure I liked this one too much and that's weird because I do enjoy a Lucas story. Never thought I'd give JS a 3 star. :(

When the Lucas Davenport series started over 30 years ago ( I have read every one ) he was a police detective in Minnesota who was solving murders. His family was part of the story line. Now he is a federal marshal chasing drug dealers. There is less psychological drama and more shoot-outs. I am enjoying the series less and less as time goes by!!! Kristi & Abby Tabby
