A competent writer.... a strong main character, but very gory and violent. Parts are not very believable. How many times can someone get hit in the head and not have a concussion?

I was pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed this book. It ranks up there with other good crime/suspense novels I have read in the past. Wasnt sure how the "Amish" aspect of the book would figure in, but it was relevant . The novel had very strong characters, and had a page turner of a story line. The author was good at explaining police terminology initially, so the reader did not have to backtrack inorder to understand the situation. I will probably read more of Castillo's novels, hoping the next one is as good as the first was.

The crimes are brutal and not for the faint of heart, but the characterization and plot are well done.

The crimes are really brutal and disturbing, but the characters and their relationships are very interesting. Characters with alot of baggage dealing with new relationships and these characters begin to "know thyself"

Kate survived a brutal crime wave in her small, rural Amish village. Now she is back as Chief of Police, and must face the fears and memories that returning home has brought back.

First book in a very nice series. Police Chief Kate Burkholder who has left her Amish community must solve murders involving the people of her heritage. Add to this the fact that she has a major secret in her past, and you have a complicated situation of trying to get the people she rejected to cooperate in the investigations. Nice character development.

Wonderful stories, easy to read and follow! Great character development! Amish life is fascinating! Really adds to the stories!
The only criticism I would have are the graphic scenes of the crime! Was a bit much for me! I wish the Author would tone these down!

The author has a real knack for description. More than a knack; it’s a real talent. Descriptions of people, places, moods, weather, all come alive. The main character is well-developed, somewhat original (an Amish female), and likeable. I got about halfway through the book thinking it would be getting five stars in my review. Then it began to suffer from all the usual problems. All the other characters were one-dimensional and hackneyed – the tough, underappreciated black cop, the loopy switchboard girl, the politician sheriff, and of course the dark, hard-drinking, bad boy state agent (male) to create sexual tension and work effectively by breaking the rules. The author also seems to feel obligated to paint us a picture of as much gore and sadistic torture as possible, pandering to the readership’s worst elements. I figured out who the murderer was well before it was revealed, and when it was revealed it was done so clumsily it was a big letdown. The killer turned into a comic book villain in an instant, a Jekyll and Hyde transformation. Still, it held my interest up to the end. It helped that the reader on the audiobook was a particularly good actress.

The first of Linda Castillo's crime series featuring Painter's Mill Chief of Police Kate Burkholder. I started reading this series with a later title and enjoyed it so much I decided to go back and read the series in order. I like the insights she gives to the Amish way of life and thinking. I'm looking forward to continuing to rear other titles in the series.
