The second book of an irresistible series narrated by a loveable and wise dog. In the newest Chet and Bernie mystery, Chet gets a glimpse of the show dog world turned deadly. "We run a detective agency, me and Bernie, called the Little Detective Agency on account of Little being Bernie's last name. My name's Chet, pure and simple. Headquarters is our house on Mesquite Road, a nice place with a big tree out front, perfect for napping under, and the whole canyon easily accessible out back, if it just so happens someone left the gate open. And then, up in the canyon -- well, say no more. "Praised by Stephen King as "a canine Sam Spade full of joie de vivre," Chet and his human companion Bernie have both had some setbacks in life -- Bernie in combat, Chet in K-9 school, but together they make up a team like no other. In Thereby Hangs a Tail, Bernie and Chet are called on to investigate threats made against an unlikely target -- a pretty, pampered show dog named Princess. What seems like a joke turns into a serious case when Princess and her owner are abducted. To make matters worse, Bernie's on-again, off-again girlfriend, reporter Susie Sanchez, disappears too. When Chet is separated from Bernie, he's on his own to put the pieces together, find his way home, and save the day. With genuine suspense and intrigue, combined with humor and insight into the special bond between man and dog, Thereby Hangs a Tail will have everyone talking.

I absolutely loved this mystery! I'm not usually a fan of books written from the point of view of an animal, but this is different. It is funny, interesting & not at all predictable.

Chet is irresistible. I've found myself going out of my way to pet dogs and say hi to them. I also went right out to get Dog On It - the first in the series.

...All I hadn't liked about the ranch were the horses. What's up with them? Totally unreliable, always twitching for no reason, but humans don't seem to get that, go on and on about how beautiful they are until I just want to trot over toward one of those weird legs, the real skinny part, and give it the tiniest...but I would never do that, at least not again, after what happened that time at the ranch.

As with the first book in the series, I found myself laughing out loud a few times in the break room, while reading this book. I am not a frequent reader of mysteries, but so enjoy the voice of the canine narrator that I am once again reaching for the next book in the series. These books are wonderfully funny, exciting, and truly joyful reads!

As a mystery, it was rather "eh" - but that's not really why people read these books. The real draw of this series is Chet, our faithful canine narrator.

There is something so compelling to dog lover's (like myself) about imagining what a dog's inner voice sounds like. And Spencer Quinn scratches that itch with perfection. Chet is so charming and loyal and goofy and forgetful and well-trained (until he's not) that it's clear that the author has bonded with a dog or two in his lifetime.

Light, humorous, and easy, these are delightful books to pull out at those times when real life has become complicated and stressful.

Entertaining and enjoyable

I enjoy the way Chet rates humans by their kindness to dogs. What a hoot! In this book, Spencer Quinn teases the reader with too many of Chet's side stories. He needs to have Chet digress into the side stories because they are as interesting and funny as the main story line.

I fell in love with Chet in Dog On It, and this is more of the same. I think Mr. Quinn just might be part dog. A very enjoyable, entertaining read. Can't wait for more.
