Lace isn't so hard to make, provided you photocopy the pattern, and mark off the rows as you go. And bonus: you use less yarn, so you can afford the good stuff. This is the best book on the topic I have found -- the styles suit most body types, and the emphasis is on accessories, so you don't end up looking like a lace doily. There is a comprehensive appendix on knitting and lace-making techniques.
