Charlie’s adventures in the Netherworld aren’t at an end. Now he faces a new foe, one that seems to have waited a long time, spun an elaborate plot and is intent on turning humans into zombies. But why? Mr. Segal clearly relishes lengthy exposition, drawing out matters and forcing his readers to think through his plots, questioning the motives of characters seen and unseen and striving to tease out the links between seemingly unconnected events. Who is passing through the Netherworld portal? What is the story behind the lighthouse that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with passing ships? Who is marshalling goblin forces? Why are people being tormented by nightmares of stern-eyed little girls, forcing them to take a soporific tonic that renders them into mindless slaves? Who are these girls who are far too old to be mere children? (If you’re put in mind of Kubrick’s creepy ghost twins from his movie “The Shining”, you’re not too far off in terms of the horror factor.) Not all of these queries are answered by the end of this book, paving the way for another diabolical sequel, no doubt. Here’s hoping that Charlie and his band of intrepid friends are up to the job.
