Is this an ... exciting movie? Not especially. Is it ... action-filled? (with Resident Evil's Milla Jovovich you might expect this, but...) No. Why then? It's a fascinating and absorbing psychological drama. So it's a performance movie. The story's about ... change. Knowing you need to make it, realizing when the moment is right to make it, and then...having a desire so great to make that change that you actually follow through, without any guarantee of the future. All four of the main characters here--the prison parole officer (De Niro), his long-suffering wife (a haunting performance by Golden-Globe winner--Six Feet Under--Frances Conroy), the convict up for parole (Norton) and his girl-friend (Jovovich)--are handed the opportunity if they see it and seize it. The story--and movie--is really Norton's, as "Stone" the convict. And watching him change his personality and behaviour's a real treat.
