This film was wonderful: shot at the lovely Ahwahnee Hotel in California, it couldn't have been more breathtaking and, given the subject matter of the film, HAUNTING. It was never filmed at the Stanley Hotel, which was the location provided by the novel, which I never read. Danny Lloyd does an excellent job as "Danny" and though the film really makes a respectable attempt to achieve perfection, it has some "flaws" like the fact that most people don't believe in ghosts, and no matter how you portray them in a movie, it is not going to make the theme of ghosts more believable. IT is actually frustrating how real the scenes are, where he is talking to ghosts, incredibly realistic, you almost want to start believing in ghosts. I think the ghost-people in this film both deserved Oscars, for how haunting their portrayals are. It is hard to believe a six-year-old could give such a natural and believable performance, as little innocent Danny, who is trapped in a haunted hotel with his (one) sane parent and his (one) psycho parent. But generally, the flaws are easy to overlook, and I loved this film to pieces. The music and the setting and the careful, methodical acting really make it a WORK of ART and something America can be proud of achieving. :))
