After reading the 2008 novel, “The Hunger Games”, I couldn’t resist the urge to read “Catching Fire”, the second novel in the series. As somebody who read the books before watching the movie, I was already hooked. The plot twists, the detail, and the character growth are undeniably breathtaking features in this novel. I was in awe, and to be frank, I still am every time I think of the book. I would definitely recommend “Catching Fire” authored by Suzanne Collins to nearly anyone and everyone as I’ve read the book as early in the fifth grade and as late as the 8th. However, depending on the kind of person you are, this book may not be suitable for you if violence triggers you or you are squirmish to such details. Suzanne Collins once again did an outstanding job putting this novel together, and I without a doubt can confirm it is an emotional rollercoaster. Katniss Everdeen is living in the Victors Village with her family. It seems relaxing, but then there are rumours of a rebellion and Katniss and Peeta have become the faces of that rebellion since they won the hunger games. What I don’t understand is why Katniss and Peeta have to pretend they're in love to quiet down the rebellion. It just doesn’t make sense to me. What happens in “Catching Fire” was beyond cruelty. Honestly, I pitied Katniss from the start of this book. She finally escaped her nightmare and was given some freedom, only to return back to her nightmare. “Catching Fire” is a tightly-plotted, fast paced book with adventure and romance. It’s definitely a lot of the same thing. Some parts of the book felt so slow and a huge chunk of “Catching Fire” felt like it was told rather than shown. There are many twists in this book and the ending is a major, satisfying, cliffhanger. I would recommend reading this book if you enjoyed the first book, “The Hunger Games”, but I personally enjoyed reading “The Hunger Games” more than “Catching Fire”. 3.5/5 stars. - @Riddikulus of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
