The only thing I can say in this book's defence is that no matter what I write it won't be a spoiler as the writer leaves the endings to our imaginations. I liked the fact that the characters are members of the Indian diaspora but from the South of India not Punjab or Gujarat as Indo-Canadian or Indo-American books are usually. I liked the references to idly, sambhar, dosa etc. instead of butter chicken. Also, the Tamil endearments like kanna and asadu were pleasing. I'm not sure how realistic the portrayal of the Raman family is. Be that as it may, it was a 'different' kind of book. The only thing I can say in this book's defence is that no matter what I write it won't be a spoiler as the writer leaves the endings to our imaginations. This is a beautiful mother/daughter relationship story about Dr.Liz, the mother and Laurie, the daughter who have diametrically opposite personalities. It is at the same time rip roaring funny and poignant which makes for a powerful combination. I wish the title had not revealed some part of the story because otherwise the story would have had more of a grand finale. It speaks to the trip of a lifetime which Dr.Liz and Laurie share to Paris and Dr. Liz's native Norway. The descriptions of the food and culture of these places are explored in detail as also the reactions of the duos to them. The authors have done credit to the story and it is a testament to their storytelling abilities that the book kept me hooked from page 1 to the end. This is a beautiful mother/daughter relationship story about Dr.Liz, the mother and Laurie, the daughter who have diametrically opposite personalities. When I'm reviewing a Biography, I'm always in a quandary as to whether It's the subject of the Biography or the quality of the writing that I'm talking about. This is one case where both are excellent. M.S. Subbulakshmi is indeed the epitome of all that is good in music and Desiraju has portrayed her as such. Desiraju has chosen his quotes well as when he quotes Pattammal, "If we surrender ourselves unconditionally to art, Sarasvati will reward us beyond measure." Since I'm all in praise of the book why did I not give it a Five star rating? Well, for me personally it was great since I'm familiar with the songs and ragas he mentions; however, I would say perhaps some more explanation is called for to make the book intelligible to non Carnatic music listeners. All in all a very erudite presentation and let's not forget the QR codes which give us some kritis to listen to. This is one book I would like to have in my personal library. When I'm reviewing a Biography, I'm always in a quandary as to whether It's the subject of the Biography or the quality of the writing that I'm talking about. Karen Cleveland's CIA background gives her an edge on plots for thrillers. In this book though I felt Beth was extremely obsessive and couldn't let go when she ought to have. The ending was surprising.

If there is one thing I can say about this book it is that it is different. Neil is the son of immigrant parents from India and he is an underachiever in the over achieving community. Sathian has written well about the Diaspora and it makes for interesting reading. The language is good and the play on words can be charming. The premise behind the book about the properties of gold is unusual. If there is one thing I can say about this book it is that it is different. When I set out to read this book I thought it was going to be a non-fiction account of making generic drugs available at a fraction of the cost of Brand name medications whose patent had expired. Little did I know that I was going to get what would read like a thriller. I stand corrected. A thriller has ups and downs with the ending almost always a plus. This book was a horror story - a no holds barred account of the junk that passes for medication. An expose of the FDA's reluctance to ban or pass stringent actions on companies in India and China who were violating all kinds of protocols. Anybody reading this book will hesitate to take generic drugs, which is a shame. We do need low cost medications but not at the cost of quality. When I set out to read this book I thought it was going to be a non-fiction account of making generic drugs available at a fraction of the cost of Brand name medications whose patent had expired.
