A great read. Loveday, the main character has a past that she doesn't want to face up to. She spends her days working in a bookshop & her time not working, is spent reading. She doesn't really like people much. A beautiful man comes into her life & gradually she starts looking at the ways she keeps herself safe & ends up closing herself off from things that she might really love to have in her world.
A book not fraught with tragedy, with moments of humour & sarcasm. Left me with a warm feeling.A great read. Loveday, the main character has a past that she doesn't want to face up to. This book was written in 1st first person. Dane heard a noise, went down stairs & ended up shooting a burglar in self-defence. It turns out the police said the burglar was known to them & declared Dane was not guilty of a crime, free to go. The burglars' father didn't see it that way & tried to take revenge but it turned out to be lies the police were telling everyone.
As Dane, the father & a private eye, Jim Bob, joined forces to get to the bottom of the truth it got more & more unbelievable. This book was written in 1st first person. This started out as a new kind of outlook about the native American. This is the first story I have read about the native American set in an urban setting in Oakland. Twelve natives are all looking forward to the big Oakland powwow happening this year.
the review said it was a story about violence & recovery, hope & loss, identity & power, but I saw very little hope & very little recovery. So far, for me, the combining of Bosch & Ballard are a good mix. This time they have several cases they clear including a case for the FBI. It starts with a cold case that Bosch found when his mentor John Jack Thompson died. A murder committed 20 years ago in an alley that was controlled by a gang. Meanwhile Ballard investigates a burnt body that turns out to be a murder. All good, fast paced & interesting. So far, for me, the combining of Bosch & Ballard are a good mix. This story came from an interesting prospective....the family dog. Not something I've done before. It was alright for a one of. He was lovely & loving. There was a death & a custody battle all interspersed with how to drive a racing car. An above average movie. Moving & funny, with no swearing or shooting which made it pretty novel (I don't mind either). It was a small story about the homeless in America, the gung-ho of the police, the way media twist things & people reaching out to others. Well done.An above average movie. I didn't like this book, I thought it might be interesting to read about Iceland & something about their culture even though it was set in the 1600s'. Really it was about people keeping secrets when the truth wasn't anything to be hidden, not telling it was weirder than telling it. Rosa married for the sake of money to a man who was living with the secrets in a village that was between the old ways of rune stones & the new Christian teachings. All very ho hum.I didn't like this book, I thought it might be interesting to read about Iceland & something about their culture even though it was set in the 1600s'. Not a good read & I am a Reacher fan. Like a B grade movie where the hero goes out & shoots everyone. It just got more outlandish as he went on. A real epic tale. Three Finnish siblings end up in America in the 1900s, in Washington state. Their story covers union organizing, logging, bootlegging, commercial fishing & poverty. The struggle each of them endured was massive, not least the sister of the trio who had to flee the old country to start again in a new country.A real epic tale. I like this book. Set in a retirement village that Florence Claybourne lives at. It is about Florence & her friend Elsie's friendship throughout the years & it's also about a mystery from their past that rears its head again in these latter years. Couldn't finish this one. By chapter 7 I felt we were still being introduced to people & nothing was happening.
It's a story set in a small town in the Australian countryside where Benny Miller went to stay. At the same time a man also arrived at the same time, in the same town but somehow he died?!?! Not riveting.
Something else that bothered me was the fact that the author used full names most of the time for example Benny Miller, Maureen Robinson & Tony Simmons. It felt odd.Couldn't finish this one. By chapter 7 I felt we were still being introduced to people & nothing was happening.

Maud starts cleaning for an elderly man called Cathal Flood but all is not as it seems & soon she is embroiled in mystery & danger. This story about Washington Black starts when he is an eleven year old slave in a Barbados sugar cane plantation. Two brothers are the white owners, one kind, one sadistic & cruel. The kind one shows favour to Washington & eventually they both end up escaping the Island but that puts Washington being hunted & unsafe anywhere, he is also abandoned by the kind brother almost immediately.
There were no characters that were believable for me & no one had any appeal including Washington Black who was the narrator of the story. This story about Washington Black starts when he is an eleven year old slave in a Barbados sugar cane plantation. This book was fairly unbelievable. A woman gets on a train & helps a woman & child, the next morning she finds the woman dead & the child nowhere to be found. There is no evidence that the girl was even there. No one believes the woman, Jenny, so Jenny proceeds to hunt for the girl herself. A successful assassin comes into it & even though he has been doing his job with overwhelming success for years this ordinary every day girl thwarts him at every turn.
